A June Full of Opportunities

Updated: Jun 9, 2022

The Georgetown County Democratic Party forecast for June is: BUSY, with a chance of progress. It's a good busy, with the SC Democratic Party Convention in Columbia, quickly followed by a Primary election to determine who our candidates for the November midterms will be, and finally a growing, jubilant Juneteenth celebration. Here is a breakdown of the many opportunities available to you this month to GET INVOLVED!

Our monthly meeting, this Thursday June 9th, will be held at Choppee Nazareth AME Church, 7817 Choppee Road, Georgetown, at 6 p.m. Meet us in Choppee to discuss getting the vote out ahead of the Primary and further developing a growing list of action items we want to achieve and/or share with our Democratic candidates, once they are selected in the Primary.

On Friday, June 10th, the South Carolina Democratic Party is hosting several events on the eve of the SCDP Convention on Saturday, June 11th. Vice President Kamala Harris will be at the Blue Palmetto Dinner, with tickets available to Convention Delegates for $100. For $150, those who are not delegates to the Convention can also enjoy dinner with Kamala Harris. A free after-party will be hosted by Congressman Jim Clyburn, among many other opportunities to mix and mingle.

The Convention itself begins Saturday morning at the Columbia Convention Center, promptly at 9 a.m., to allow attendees the opportunity to participate in the March For Our Lives at the State House from 12-2 p.m. Folks who won't be at the Convention can also attend a March For Our Lives event closer to home, at Valor Park in Myrtle Beach.

Early Voting for the June 14th Primary is in full swing, but ends this Friday, June 10th. Registered voters can vote EARLY at any of four locations in Georgetown County from 8-5:30 through the end of the day Friday. The South Carolina Primary Election is Tuesday, June 14th. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Find your polling place HERE if you are unable to vote early.

To wrap up a very busy couple of weeks for Democrats and Allies, spend some time at the Juneteenth Celebration in Georgetown on Saturday, June 18th. Beginning with a parade at 11 a.m., a press conference, and a day and night of festivities, the event promises to be great fun and an opportunity to celebrate the end of slavery in the United States. We would love for you to march with us to share our joy for the commemoration of freedom for all Americans while recognizing the challenges many still face today as a result of the history we have failed to reconcile.

Wait, that's not all. June is PRIDE month, and we would like to make you aware of Pawleys Island PFLAG, whose mission is to bring together the LGBTQ+ affirming people in the Pawleys Island area to create a SAFE space for all. Follow them for opportunities to get involved and build a supportive community for those who often feel excluded and outcast simply for being born. Y'all means ALL!
